HPV comes in many different varieties (over 100 at the latest count). The majority of these cause some form of warts on the skin or the mucous membranes. Often the warts are harmless, though still contagious, and treatment is not required as these common warts will eventually disappear on their own over time as the bodies immune system eventually defeats the virus. However there is no cure as such for HPV, even though the symptoms may disappear i.e. the warts, the virus remains dormant in the body and can become active again in certain circumstances. Nowadays there are vaccines on the market, and many more in development, to protect against this virus as we now know that HPV is implicated in many cancers such as cervical cancer, anal cancer and even throat cancer.
